VENICE GLASS WEEK

From the 14th to the 22nd of September 2024, Venice will host the Venice Glass Week, an entire week dedicated to the promotion of the art of making glass.
The eighth edition of the internationally known festival is ready to welcome more than 250 activities proposed by 230 local and non-local entities. It will be possible to attend exhibitions, installations, talks, workshops and shows organized in Venice, Murano and Mestre.

The Glass Week aims to support and promote the art of glass, internationally recognized as the flagship of the city.
The glass processing has very ancient origins. The first traces were found in Mesopotamia around the 16th century BC, but it is in Venice, specifically in Murano, that this art has been refined over the centuries.

It is with pride that Rosa Barovier Mentasti, president of the scientific committee of the festival, declares that this year there were more than 300 applications: a record number highlighting how this sector lives and vibrates thanks to the creativity and professionalism of its masters who fiercely pass on this art.

The Glass Week becomes the perfect opportunity to revive venetian buildings and magic places usually known for art, under the common denominator of glass. An example is the exhibition ' Saltwaters ', organized by Artworks Australia, which celebrates sea grasses with glass objects, treating them as unknown heroes of the sea; but also 'Lo spazio infranto di Franco Beraldo ' organized by the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation at Palazzetto Tito, which pays homage to the creativity of the master Beraldo through paintings and glass works. We finally want to mention the exhibition ‘ Convito di Vetro ’, taking place at the Galleria dell’Accademia in collaboration with Pentagram Stiftung, that celebrates the aesthetic evolution of Murano glass by setting up a table with glass sets for wines, soft drinks and liqueurs made in Murano since the 1920s.

During the month of September the city is also hosting the third edition of Homo Faber. This event turns out to be a great opportunity to celebrate the glass along with the Glass Week, being the biggest cultural event dedicated to craftmanship.
The exhibition at the Giorgio Cini Foundation will then present the fun “Venice Glass Week tour by Select”, a chance to visit some Murano furnaces accompanied by an aperitif sponsored by Select.

In occasion of the Glass Week 2023, Sist’Art Gallery hosted an exhibition of the master Davide Salvadore in its desecrated chapel. This year, some works of Salvadore’s furnace are present at Homo Faber and he will hold demonstrations and workshops during the Glass Week.

The great variety of events and workshops offered during the week (such as drawing with four hands or laboratories to create your own murrina) allows the Venice Glass Week to be very suitable and engaging for everyone, also perfect for families with children.
